Photo: Trotsky and His Rabbits

Leon Trotsky, the bloodthirsty Bolshevik revolutionary, who was responsible for millions of deaths during the Russian revolution and the brutal Civil War that followed, also had a softer gentler side as this photo shows.

Taken during his exile in Mexico, it shows Trotsky tending his beloved rabbits. According to unconfirmed reports, he named them after members of the Soviet Politburo and killed and ate them in the same order that Stalin purged their human namesakes.
